WHO WE ARE
Monti Clinical Research Centre is a dedicated clinical research centre that is situated in Mdantsane township in the outskirts of East London, approximately 30km from King Phalo Airport (East London Airport). The centre is strategically located within Cecilia Makiwane Hospital, a state of the art 600 bed hospital that is situated in a township making it well positioned to conduct clinical research that contributes to equitable and accessible health care and the improvement of health outcomes for surrounding communities and the Africa region.
Our positioning within the hospital allows us to leverage Cecilia Makiwane Hospital to conduct operational research and clinical trials, and to collaborate with the hospital clinicians on research and research related initiatives, using our well-equipped centre supported by experienced research staff.
As a new clinical research centre, we partner with established clinical research and clinical trial sites. The site is led by local based team which has many years of experience in clinical research and had participated in a variety of clinical trials.
Our approach to clinical research is built on engaging the communities and ensuring that communities are engaged and represented as partners in the design and implementation of clinical trials. We leverage our experience in clinical research to ensure that good clinical practices are built into our work.
LOCATION AND BACKGROUND
The Buffalo City Municipal Metro is one of the two Metropolitans in the Eastern Cape Province and hosts the administrative capital of the Province at Bisho. BCM Health District has three sub-areas or districts, these are East London, Mdantsane and King Williamstown / Bhisho.
The Metro is characterized by a young population with an under 5’s and a 15 – 39 years of age bulge. The district accommodates quite a large number of tertiary learning institutions in comparison to all other districts in the province.
The majority of the population is centred in the East London Sub area and as such the bulk of Primary Healthcare facilities are in the East London Sub area.
BCM Health District has 74 Primary Healthcare Facilities, 2 Satellite Clinics, 11 Functional Mobile Clinics, 5 Community Health Centres, 2 District Hospitals and 2 Specialized Hospitals, 1 Regional Hospital and 1 Tertiary Hospital.
